InnovaCrew Advises Customers
to Delay Installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2
ROSEVILLE, CALIFORNIA, AUGUST 9,
2004
Microsoft has announced that the Windows XP Service Pack 2
update will be available for download from the Internet this
week. The service pack is a sweeping set of updates and changes
to the Windows XP software to increase security and add some new
features. These new security features are intended to help
prevent pop-up ads, spyware, viruses, and other nasty security
problems in your computer. The update is offered free to
everyone using Windows XP, either Home or Professional versions.
With any brand new product it is
usually not a good idea to be the first on your block to get it.
This is especially true for critical business software such as
Windows. Therefore, we recommend that you do not install the
Windows XP SP2 software update at this time. In the weeks and
months ahead others around the world will install and
troubleshoot the update. It’s better to let them find out the
bugs and problems instead of you. Many people will be able to
use SP2 without any trouble – especially if the other programs
are current. Others will need to have their other programs
updated to work with the new security features of Windows XP
SP2.
Microsoft is very eager to have
people install this software and will begin automatically
downloading and installing software updates this week. To
prevent problems, we recommend you turn off automatic updates
for the time being. To do so:
To turn automatic updates on or off:
1. Click Start, click Control
Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click
System.
2. On the Automatic Updates
tab, uncheck the box that says “keep my computer up to date”
We would expect to begin
recommending the Windows XP SP2 update around Halloween or
Thanksgiving, once the dust has settled. If you have questions
or concerns, please give the office a call.
